Finding the right furniture – the style, the sit, the colour, the fabric – is only half the battle. The next step is not as easy as thought. I believe you should reverse this and create a plan first.

Create a Plan

If you go shopping without a plan, you run the risk of committing many furniture woes. From off-scale pieces to out-of-place focal points. As any professional would do, I would never begin without a plan.

I have mentioned before how useful a floor plan is and how easy it is to create. Simply use graph paper – one square is one foot – and include the walls, windows and doors to scale.

Choosing a Rug

If it’s a rug you are after, please make sure all furniture legs are firmly on the rug. A too-small rug shrinks the room dramatically. Mind you, the rule of thumb should have the edges of the rug at least a foot from the walls. You don’t want your new rug to look like a postage stamp on the floor.

Furniture Placement

Another issue I have is furniture pushed up against the wall. In a small room, you may have little or no option of doing this. If you have a larger space, keep the big pieces of furniture away from the walls. This gives a surprising open feeling. If you are lucky enough to have a large living room, designate an area for a reading nook, a games table or a media centre. Creating “zones” has a purpose and the possibilities are endless.

When you have your plan in place and in your hands, we are looking forward to working with you to build the perfect space for you and your family.
