Sanctuary, retreat, haven, private sanctum, oasis.

These terms emphasize the primary or main bedroom as a peaceful and intimate personal space. The first decision is the position of the bed, as it is the focal point. Placing the bed against a wall will maximize the space, but do not have it against the wall that shares with neighbours. Under a window could also be problematic with the combination of noise and drafts. Placing the bed with at least two feet surrounding it is best for function. Place the furniture against the walls, but not too many pieces which clutters and distract from the calm.

Colours for your bedroom range from the soothing warm neutrals to earthy tones of greens that evoke a calm and restful environment. Stay away from bold, bright colours like reds, blues or bright greens and yellows. Another idea is to colour-drench your bedroom, bringing a collectiveness to the space, even if you choose different values of one colour.

Layer the lighting as well. Not only an overhead, but soft scones or nightstand lamps can pair with complementary styles on the dresser. Soft, warm light calms and relaxes to ensure an ease into sleep. Focus on keeping the bedroom design free of clutter, and the addition of plants adds to the calm for sleep.
